I’ve seen Jason Munn’s work of The Small Stakes many times before. In the design annuals, online, and I’m not sure where else but he deserves every ounce of press that he gets. Jason lives in Oakland, California and although originally from Wisconsin his work has become a fixture of the independent music industry.
His work is simple and dynamic and it is no wonder why his studio, The Small Stakes is unfolding into a successful independent studio. His work above for the music group Stars is what originally captured my interest and the ornate pattern with the skeleton key silhouettes are just beautiful. And not only do I love the poster but I am now a fan of Stars music!
His poster shop is filled with an amazing variety of posters for independent music groups for the likes of Modest Mouse, Death Cab for Cutie and other amazing bands that your sure to love the posters as well as the music.
Many if not most of them use neutral colors in the best way imaginable and it just proves that you don’t need a rainbow of colors to capture the eyes of onlookers.
The poster above for National is a two-color silkscreen as most of his posters are created with the two-color silkscreening process and uses a great design of alternating bottles sharing a label featuring the National name and information. I want this poster in my collection along with the Stars poster.
For more information visit The Small Stakes site or visit the Poster Shop to buy one of the amazing prints seen here (some are Sold Out, so don’t get too excited) and for an in-depth interview, visit the Grain Edit site.
